In Memory of Mr. R. C. Smith

Mr. R. C. Smith of Decatur, Long time IOTFA member and served as MC for five years as the Annual Fiddle Contest Master of Ceremonies

It is with sadness we bear the loss of Mr. R. C. Smith of Decatur, IL.  RC was a thirty year member and supporter of the IOTFA and he attended our jams and monthly meetings on a regular basis.  He served as Contest MC for five years and in recent times shared those duties with Mr. Todd Fultz of Sullivan, IL.  RC was very active in his community by being involved in and serving many organizations over the years.  He was known by all the IOTFA members and admired by all who met him.

Mr. Ed Fravell is also a long time member who was good friends with Mr. R. C. Smith having been associated with the IOTFA during the same time period.  Ed lives in Orient, IL, which is northwest of West Frankfort, IL a short distance.  For years, Ed would drive the long distance from Orient to Shelbyville, IL on the third Sundays to attend the monthly meetings and other gigs to play music.  Ed loves to play “backup” for fiddlers and played for many contestants over those years.  The photo here was probably taken around 2004 and he can be seen between contestants or fiddle tunes.  Ed conceived, designed and contracted with an entity to have a plaque made to present to R. C.’s family.  Thus we contacted Bryan to arrange for the presentation during the October 27, 2019 contest.  Our thanks to Ed for his thoughtfulness in providing a marker for the end of the life of one of our most beloved members, Mr. R. C. Smith.  A photo of the plaque is shown below.
